Sharp Drop In US Support for Israel, New Poll Shows
Mondoweiss
… The state-run radio station’s Washington correspondent, Nathan Guttman, obtained data from a recent unpublished poll, conducted by the Israel Project, an organization that works to improve Israel’s image in the United States. The Israel Project has been conducting a periodic running poll, asking American registered voters questions about Israel … There is a steep decline in the percentage of Americans who say that the U.S. should support Israel. That has dropped from 71% in March 2008 (at the time of the Annapolis process) to only 44% now.
Israeli 'Settlements': Fictions on the Ground
Tony Judt -- The New York Times
… Thus President Obama faces a choice. He can play along with the Israelis, pretending to believe their promises of good intentions and the significance of the distinctions they offer him. Such a pretense would buy him time and favor with Congress. But the Israelis would be playing him for a fool, and he would be seen as one in the Mideast and beyond. Alternatively, the president could break with two decades of American compliance, acknowledge publicly that the emperor is indeed naked, dismiss Mr. Netanyahu for the cynic he is and remind Israelis that all their settlements are hostage to American goodwill. He could also remind Israelis that the illegal communities have nothing to do with Israel's defense, much less its founding ideals of agrarian self-sufficiency and Jewish autonomy.
The Risky Provocations of Mr. Netanyahu
Leonard Fein -- Forward (New York)
… I sometimes fear there’s a genetically inbred survival characteristic of the Jews that predisposes us to try to beat the system, to get away with things, a characteristic that came in very handy for all those many centuries during which the nerve and cleverness to beat the system enabled survival, but that has now become a dysfunctional anachronism. Be that as it may, Netanyahu’s stance will likely turn out to be a serious miscalculation of Obama’s intentions and abilities. Obama has no intention of endangering Israel, but when it comes to outsmarting a would-be outsmarter, he is not exactly a beginner.
Netanyahu’s Speech: When He Says Yes, What Does He Mean?
Uri Avnery (Israel)
… The idea of the Palestinian state has now become a part of the national consensus, and only a handful of ultra-rightists reject it directly. But this is only the beginning. The main struggle will be about turning the idea into reality. The entire speech was addressed to one single person: Barack Obama. It was not designed to appeal to the Palestinians … Obama is not seeking a frontal collision with the Israeli government. It seems that he wants to exert “soft” pressure, vigorously but quietly. To my mind, that is a wise approach.
U.S. Jewish Leaders Deeply Troubled by Obama
Haaretz (Israel)
There is growing concern among the American Jewish community over Obama's Mideast initiatives, this according to the executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Malcolm Hoenlein. "President Obama's strongest supporters among Jewish leaders are deeply troubled by his recent Middle East initiatives, and some are questioning what he really believes," Hoenlein, said in an interview published Monday.
Carter Says Palestinians Treated 'Like Animals'
AFP
Former US president Jimmy Carter on Tuesday met Hamas leader Ismail Haniya in the Gaza Strip, where he called for a lifting of Israel's blockade, saying Palestinians are being treated "like animals." Following the talks, Carter called for an end of "all violence" against both Israelis and Palestinians. "This is holy land for us all and my hope is that we can have peace ... all of us are children of Abraham," he said at a joint news conference with Haniya, prime minister of the Hamas government in the Palestinian enclave.
Holocaust Lawyer Edward Fagan is Disbarred For Misusing Victims’ Funds
The Star-Ledger (New Jersey)
Only a few years ago, Edward Fagan was a world-renowned lawyer for the underdog, brash and audacious enough to take on Swiss banks and even whole countries to win judgments for Holocaust survivors and victims of South African apartheid. This week, the Supreme Court announced he was barred from practicing law in New Jersey, completing one of the steepest falls from grace in the state's law community. The court found Fagan, 56, misappropriated nearly $400,000 of the money he won for the victims he so effectively championed.
Israeli Firms Accused of Profiting Off Holocaust
Jonathan Cook
Israel’s second largest bank will be forced to defend itself in court in the coming weeks over claims it is withholding tens of millions of dollars in “lost” accounts belonging to Jews who died in the Nazi death camps. Bank Leumi has denied it holds any such funds despite a parliamentary committee revealing in 2004 that the bank owes at least $75 million to the families of several thousand Holocaust victims. Analysts said the bank’s role is only the tip of an iceberg in which Israeli companies and state bodies could be found to have withheld billions of dollars invested by Holocaust victims in the country -- dwarfing the high-profile reparations payouts from such European countries as Switzerland.
In Israel, Survivors Seek Holocaust Restitution From Major Bank
The Jerusalem Post (Israel)
… On Wednesday, the men were in court as a NIS 300 million [Israeli shekels] lawsuit was filed by the Company for the Restitution of Holocaust Victims Assets against Bank Leumi, over assets that the group says belong to thousands of Holocaust victims and their heirs … He added that it was unconscionable that Swiss banks, and "even German banks" could return money to Jewish victims, but that an Israeli bank would balk at returning funds. "Jews stealing money from Jews who died at Auschwitz; this I cannot accept," he said. It is a wicked injustice that an Israeli bank is holding on to money that belongs to Holocaust survivors, some of whom are dying of hunger in Israel," said Menachem Ariav, chairman of the restitution organization.
A New Perspective on the Confederacy: The South’s Civil War
Heather Gray - Counterpunch
… All over the South, however, there were pockets of communities opposed to the South’s secession and angry at the arrogance of the ruling elite for seceding. The planters after all, controlled the secession conventions and the decisions from the state conventions were not sent to the people for a vote. Some communities even declared secession from the Confederacy itself … Not long into the war, families began to struggle and starve and the requests from the families to come home were too compelling. At one point during the war, according to Williams, two-thirds of the Confederate army had deserted.
Crocodile’s Tears
Gush Shalom (Israel)
Those who oppress millions of Palestinians for 42 years – Rave about the freedom fighters - in Iran. Those who rejected the results of the Palestinian elections – Are shocked by the thwarting of the people’s will - in Iran. Those who shoot and kill Palestinian demonstrators In Wadi Ara, Bilin and Nialin – Shudder at the sight of the police shooting protesters - in Iran.
Seeing Through All the Propaganda About Iran
Eric Margolis
Iran’s political crisis continues to blaze. It’s still impossible to say which leaders or factions will emerge victorious, but one thing is certain: the earthquake in the Islamic Republic is shaking the Mideast and deeply confusing everyone, including the US government … We also hear lot of hypocrisy from Western capitals. Washington, Ottawa, London and Paris piously accused Iran of improper electoral procedures while utterly ignoring the total lack of democracy in their authoritarian Mideast allies such as Egypt, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia, that never hold elections and throw political opponents into prison and torture them. Compared to them, Iran, for all its faults, is almost a model of democratic governance.
Ex-Detainees Allege Abuse at US Facility in Afghanistan
Ian Pannell -- BBC News
Allegations of abuse and neglect at a US detention facility in Afghanistan have been uncovered by the BBC. Former detainees have alleged they were beaten, deprived of sleep and threatened with dogs at the Bagram military base. The BBC interviewed 27 former inmates of Bagram around the country over a period of two months. The Pentagon has denied the charges and insisted that all inmates in the facility are treated humanely. All the men were asked the same questions and they were all interviewed in isolation. They were held at various times between 2002 and 2008. They were all accused of belonging to or helping al-Qaeda or the Taliban. None were charged with any offence or put on trial …
A New Look at Israel’s 1967 Attack on the USS Liberty
Bruce Ramsey -- The Seattle Times
On June 8, 1967, a U.S. Navy ship was attacked by Israel. It happened during the Six Day War, when Israel was attacking a lot of things, and the Israeli government apologized, saying it thought the ship was Egyptian. The apology was quickly accepted by the major U.S. politicians and media: It had all been an accident. The details, however, made no sense as an accident. This has been said before, and is said in detail in James Scott's new book, "The Attack on the Liberty."
Confidential Memo Reveals US Plan to Provoke an Invasion of Iraq
The Observer (Britain)
A confidential record of a meeting between President Bush and Tony Blair before the invasion of Iraq, outlining their intention to go to war without a second United Nations resolution, will be an explosive issue for the official inquiry into the UK's role in toppling Saddam Hussein. The memo, written on 31 January 2003, almost two months before the invasion and seen by the Observer, confirms that as the two men became increasingly aware UN inspectors would fail to find weapons of mass destruction (WMD) they had to contemplate alternative scenarios that might trigger a second resolution legitimising military action.
Are The Iranian Election Protests Another US Orchestrated ‘Color Revolution’?
Paul Craig Roberts
… Commentators are "explaining" the Iran elections based on their own illusions, delusions, emotions, and vested interests. Whether or not the poll results predicting Ahmadinejad's win are sound, there is, so far, no evidence beyond surmise that the election was stolen. However, there are credible reports that the CIA has been working for two years to destabilize the Iranian government. On May 23, 2007, Brian Ross and Richard Esposito reported on ABC News: “The CIA has received secret presidential approval to mount a covert “black” operation to destabilize the Iranian government, current and former officials in the intelligence community tell ABC News.”
Effects of Ill-Advised CIA Plot in Iran Still Haunts U.S.
John M. Crisp
Now that Iran looms on our horizon, here's a story that every American should know. Journalist Sandra Mackey tells it in "The Iranians," as does Daniel Yergin in "The Prize," his monumental history of oil. But the best extended version of the story that I've read is in "All the Shah's Men" by Stephen Kinzer. Although other historians have told this story as well, I suspect that the average American has never heard of Mohammad Mossadegh and Operation Ajax.
Budget Crisis Threatens California Schools
The Associated Press
California's historic budget crisis threatens to devastate a public education system that was once considered a national model but now ranks near the bottom in school funding and academic achievement. Deep budget cuts are forcing California school districts to lay off thousands of teachers, expand class sizes, close schools, eliminate bus service, cancel summer school programs, and possibly shorten the academic year. Without a strong economic recovery, which few experts predict, the reduced school funding could last for years, shortchanging millions of students, driving away residents and businesses, and darkening California's economic future.
Israeli Minister Proposes Zionist State Sanctions Against US
The Jerusalem Post (Israel)
In a sign of growing concern in Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's government over US President Barack Obama's Middle East policies, Minister-without-Portfolio Yossi Peled proposed Israeli sanctions on the US in a letter to cabinet ministers on Sunday. In the 11-page letter, obtained by The Jerusalem Post from a minister on Monday, Peled recommends steps Israel can take to compensate for the shift in American policy, which he believes has become hostile to Israel.
Adolf Hitler, Up Close: Unseen Photographs Published
Life
Between 1936 and 1945, German photographer Hugo Jaeger was granted unprecedented access to Adolf Hitler, traveling and chronicling, in color, the Fuehrer and his confidants at small gatherings, public events, and, quite often, in private moments. Here, and in several other galleries on Life, we now present never-before-published photographs from Jaeger's astonishing collection.
ADL Director Declares War on Freedom of Speech
Robert Stark - Examiner
The Anti-Defamation League Director for the Plains States, Alan Potash, has just declared war against our First Amendment right to freedom of speech … On a number of occasions as I have pointed out they have opposed the right to freedom of speech. The ADL has smeared as anti-semites Professor John Mearsheimer for his book critical of the Israeli Lobby, and former President Jimmy Carter for his book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid". The ADL has also supported Europe and Canada's policies on prosecuting what their governments deem as hate speech.
Are Traditional History Courses Vanishing?
The New York Times
… The shift in focus began in the late 1960s and early ’70s, when a generation of academics began looking into the roles of people generally missing from history books — women, minorities, immigrants, workers. Social and cultural history, often referred to as bottom-up history, offered fresh subjects. Diplomatic historians, by contrast, generally work from the top down, diving into official archives and concentrating on people in power, an approach often tagged as elitist and old-fashioned … There are no reliable statistics on course offerings, but Mr. Kaiser and others argue there has been an obvious nosedive. “European diplomacy is just about completely dead,” Mr. Kaiser said, “and it’s very hard to find a course on the origins of the First World War.”
The Iranian People Speak
Ken Ballen and Patrick Doherty -- The Washington Post
The election results in Iran may reflect the will of the Iranian people. Many experts are claiming that the margin of victory of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was the result of fraud or manipulation, but our nationwide public opinion survey of Iranians three weeks before the vote showed Ahmadinejad leading by a more than 2 to 1 margin -- greater than his actual apparent margin of victory in Friday's election.
The Biggest Bill in History: Dealing With the Fiscal Mess
The Economist (Britain)
The worst global economic storm since the 1930s may be beginning to clear, but another cloud already looms on the financial horizon: massive public debt. Across the rich world governments are borrowing vast amounts as the recession reduces tax revenue and spending mounts — on bail-outs, unemployment benefits and stimulus plans. New figures from economists at the IMF suggest that the public debt of the ten leading rich countries will rise from 78% of GDP in 2007 to 114% by 2014. These governments will then owe around $50,000 for every one of their citizens. Not since the Second World War have so many governments borrowed so much so quickly or, collectively, been so heavily in hock.
Netanyahu's `Brilliant’ Peace Plan
Hasan Abu Nimah and Ali Abunimah
… It would be nice if we could really dismiss Netanyahu's speech as a joke. But it is an important indicator of a hard reality. Contrary to some naive and optimistic hopes, Netanyahu does not represent only an extremist fringe in Israel. Today, the Israeli Jewish public presents (with a handful of exceptions) a united front in favor of a racist, violent ultra-nationalism fueled by religious fanaticism ... Israel is a society where virulent anti-Arab racism and Nakba denial are the norm although none of the European and American leaders who constantly lecture about Holocaust denial will dare to admonish Netanyahu for his bald lies and omissions about Israel's ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians …
British Academic Union Votes to Boycott Israeli Universities
JTA
Britain's main academic union voted overwhelmingly to boycott Israeli universities and colleges. The University and College Union passed the boycott resolution at its annual meeting last week. It is the fourth year in a row that the union has passed a resolution condemning Israel and supporting the boycott of Israeli academics and academic institutions. The key resolution calls on UCU branches to discuss boycotting Israel, and commits the union to organize a pro-boycott conference for other trade unions to attend.
`Race Hate’ Britons Return to UK for Sentencing
Daily Mail (Britain)
Two Britons who fled to the United States after they were accused of waging a campaign of hate against Jews and other minority groups appeared in front of a British court today [June 17] after they were returned to the UK. Simon Sheppard, 52, and Stephen Whittle, 42, were convicted of a number of race-hate crimes at Leeds Crown Court following two lengthy trials, the last of which finished in January. By then the pair had skipped bail and fled to California. Simon Sheppard and Stephen Whittle have been deported to the UK after skipping bail and fleeing to California. They will be sentenced next month.
British Police Detain White People `To Balance Racial Statistics’
The Independent (Britain)
White members of the public are being unlawfully detained by the police in order to give "racial balance" to stop-and-search statistics, a report by the Government's watchdog on terror laws has found. Lord Carlile, the independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, said he knew of cases where suspects were stopped by officers even though there was no evidence or suspicion against them … He said police were carrying out the searches on people they had no basis for suspecting so they could avoid accusations of prejudice.
Canadian Jewish Congress Organized Nazis, Says Author
The Right Perspective
A Jewish-Canadian author is in a battle of words with the Canadian Jewish Congress after alleging the organization props up neo-Nazi groups to get "hate crime" legislation passed and expand the role of the country's Human Rights Commission. Neo-conservative author Ezra Levant claims in his latest book, Shakedown, that the Canadian Jewish Congress hired ex-cop John Garrity to work for the Canadian Nazi Party in the 1960's … Garrity did admit that the Canadian Nazi Party did not conspire to or implement any violent or illegal activities. In fact, any violence Garrity saw was done by Jewish and anti-racist vigilantes."
Russian Military Historian Blames Poland for Starting World War II
The Associated Press
As the Kremlin presses a campaign to recast Russia's 20th century history in a more favorable light, a research paper published Thursday on the Defense Ministry's Web site blamed Poland for starting World War II … "Everyone who has studied the history of World War II without bias knows that the war began because of Poland's refusal to satisfy Germany's claims," he writes. Kovalyov called the demands "quite reasonable."
Blood & Iron
Taki Theodoracopulos
… A far greater historian, Anthony Beevor, has just published a magnificent book about D-Day … Most of the [German] troopers had family back in Germany that had been killed from the air raids of the Anglo-Americans. They knew the truth, that women, children and old people were being incinerated daily from orders by Churchill and Roosevelt. So they took their revenge as best they could killing young Americans, Brits, and Canadians thrown into battle by power-hungry leaders luxuriating back home. Facing annihilation, the Germans fought with incredible courage and devotion to duty, and lost 240,000 men in the process.
Pirate Fishing Causing Eco Disaster and Killing Communities
The Guardian (Britain)
The new report confirms uncontrolled waves of violent, eco-damaging and illegal fishing activity worldwide … / Pirate fishing is out of control, depriving some the most world's most vulnerable communities of food and leading to ecological catastrophe, a three-year investigation has found. "Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing is one of the most serious threats to the future of world fisheries. It is now occurring in virtually all fishing grounds from shallow coastal waters to deep oceans. It is believed to account for a significant proportion of the global catch and to be costing developing countries up to $15 billion a year," says the report by the Environmental Justice Foundation.
European Union Donates Millions to Preserve Auschwitz
The Associated Press
The European Union will give 4.2 million euros ($5.9 million) to help preserve Auschwitz, the former Nazi death camp, which more than six decades after the World War II is in a state of serious disrepair. Rafal Pioro, who heads Auschwitz's conservation department, said the EU recently promised 19 million zlotys (about 4.2 million euros) to fund badly needed repairs on the camp's structures. Museum officials and others are struggling to preserve Auschwitz, a vast complex of barbed wire, gas chambers, barracks and watchtowers, that stands as historical evidence and as a symbol of Nazi evil. The site gets about 1 million visitors per year.
Obama Breeds Climate of Hate Against Jews
Rabbi Dr. Morton H. Pomerantz
… In Cairo, Obama said things that pose a grave danger to Jews in Israel, in America and everywhere. And if his views are not vigorously opposed they will help create a danger as great as that posed by the Nazis to the Jewish people … At first blush Mr. Obama’s speech seemed rosy, optimistic — one that espoused tolerance and understanding. If you scratch the surface it is a dangerous document that history will view as a turning point for America and Israel — one that will lead to dangerous times ahead for both Jews and believing Christians.
German World War II `E-Boat’ Rises Again
MSNBC
In a nondescript shed in a English seaside village, the remains of a Nazi torpedo boat behind one of the worst U.S. catastrophes in World War II rests on cradle of lumber. And almost 65 years to the day after this German vessel played its part in a D-Day dress rehearsal gone wrong that ended with 749 Americans servicemen dead, three survivors of the Exercise Tiger disaster garner their first glimpse of E-boat S130 … “These were the fastest things afloat then," said the chain-smoking Owles, 56. "They were miles ahead of us technologically. They could operate in much worse weather conditions than we could.”
After 60 Years, Germans Learn to Love Themselves
Reuters
After six decades atoning for the crimes of the Nazis, Germans are rediscovering a sense of patriotism and are no longer ashamed to wave their flag and sing the national anthem. They are even daring to discuss bringing back a bravery medal -- unthinkable a decade ago in a country which rejected militarism and turned fiercely pacifist. This non-aggressive self confidence, also evident in a more assertive foreign policy, is increasingly manifesting itself as Germany this year celebrates 60 years as a democracy and the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Morris Dees and SPLC: King of the Hate Business
Alexander Cockburn
… What is the arch-salesman of hate mongering, Mr. Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center, going to do now? Ever since 1971, U.S. Postal Service mailbags have bulged with his fundraising letters, scaring dollars out of the pockets of trembling liberals aghast at his lurid depictions of hate-sodden America, in dire need of legal confrontation by the SPLC …The SPLC was “the wealthiest civil rights group in America,” with $120 million in assets … Total revenue in 2007 was $44,727,257 and program expenses $20,804,536. In other words, the Southern Poverty Law Center was raising twice as much as it was spending on its proclaimed mission.
The Wages of Hubris and Vengeance: Israel’s Future
Arno J. Mayer
Israel is in the grip of a kind of collective schizophrenia. Not only its governors but the majority of its Jewish population have delusions of both grandeur and persecution, making for a distortion of reality and inconsistent behavior … Remembering the Shoah [Holocaust] is Israel’s Eleventh Commandment and central to the nation’s civil religion and Weltanschauung. Family, school, synagogue, and official culture propagate its prescriptive narrative, decontextualized and surfeited with ethnocentrism. The re-memorizing of victimization is ritualized on Yom Ha Shoah and institutionalized by Yad Vashem. Israel uses the Holocaust to conjure the specter of a timeless existential peril, in turn used to justify its warfare state and unbending diplomacy.
The Tone and the Music: Obama’s Speech in Cairo
Uri Avnery (Israel)
… From the very first word, every listener in the hall and in the world felt the honesty of the man, that his heart and his tongue were in harmony, that this is not a politician of the old familiar sort - hypocritical, sanctimonious, calculating. His body language was speaking, and so were his facial expressions That's why the speech was so important. The new moral integrity and the sense of honesty increased the impact of the revolutionary content. And a revolutionary speech it certainly was. In 55 minutes, it not only wiped away the eight years of George W. Bush, but also much of the preceding decades, from World War II on.
`Doonesbury’ Comic `Maligns’ Judaism, Says ADL
E&P Pub
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) on Monday released the text of a letter it sent to cartoonist Garry Trudeau over his May 31, 2009 “Doonesbury” strip. Several of the comic’s characters, including Sam and Rev. Sloan, are discussing Jesus Christ, and how the one time Christ “really only snaps once” in the Bible was “with the moneylenders.” Which, apparently, was enough to spur the ADL into action.
Jewish Group Alarmed by Nationalists’ Success in Europe
European Jewish Press
Alarmed by the gains made by extreme-right groups across Europe in Sunday's European elections, the European Jewish Congress (EJC) called Tuesday EU officials to "immediately engage in issues of tolerance and intercultural dialogue." “The success of the far-right and nationalistic parties that won seats in the elections on the basis of racist, anti-Semitic and xenophobic platforms points to a clear erosion of tolerance and a clarion call to European officials to immediately engage in intercultural dialogue,” the EJC said in a statement.
What the Bilderberg Group May Be Planning Now
Stephen Lendman
For over 14 years, Daniel Estulin has investigated and researched the Bilderberg Group's far-reaching influence on business and finance, global politics, war and peace, and control of the world's resources and its money … They called themselves the Bilderberg Group with a membership representing a who's who of world power elites … Whatever its early mission, the Group is now "a shadow world government … threaten(ing) to take away our right to direct our own destinies (by creating) a disturbing reality" very much harming the public's welfare. In short, Bilderbergers want to supplant individual nation-state sovereignty with an all-powerful global government, corporate controlled, and check-mated by militarized enforcement.
The USS Liberty: America’s Most Shameful Secret
Eric Margolis (2001)
… Far more shocking was Washington's response. Writes Bamford: 'Despite the overwhelming evidence that Israel attacked the ship and killed American servicemen deliberately, the Johnson Administration and Congress covered up the entire incident.' Why? Domestic politics. Johnson, a man never noted for high moral values, preferred to cover up the attack rather than anger a key constituency and major financial backer of the Democratic Party. Congress was even less eager to touch this 'third rail' issue.
Getting to the Truth About World War II
Eric Margolis
… Germany’s army and air force were broken on the Eastern Front’s titanic battles. The numbers speak for themselves. The Soviets destroyed 75–80% of all German divisions – 4 million soldiers – and most of the Luftwaffe. Russia lost at least 14 million soldiers and a similar number of civilians. The Red Army destroyed 507 Axis divisions. On the Western Front after D-Day, the Allies destroyed 176 badly under-strength German divisions … World War II was not a good and evil struggle between "western democracies" and "totalitarian powers," as we are still wrongly taught.
Revisionists Challenge D-Day Story
Hugh Schofield -- BBC News
A revisionist theme seems to have settled on this year's 65th anniversary commemoration of the Normandy landings. The tone was set in Antony's Beevor's new book, D-Day, which tries to debunk certain received ideas about the Allied campaign. Far from being an unmitigated success, Mr Beevor found, the landings came very close to going horribly wrong. And far from being universally welcomed as liberators, many troops had a distinctly surly reception from the people of Normandy.
Obama as a Modern Pharaoh
Kevin MaDonald
Those of us who are critical of the power of the Israel Lobby have been intrigued by the fact that the Obama administration seems to be standing up to the Israelis — and, by implication, to the Israel Lobby … Any attempt to rein in the settlements or make a meaningful withdrawal from the West Bank and East Jerusalem or allow a viable Palestinian state would produce a civil war among Israelis. But it’s also quite clear that there is no political will in Israel for supporting such policies ... One can talk about U.S. interests or Israeli interests all one wants, but this is a fight to the finish. I’m not sure that Obama realizes what he’s getting into.
Sixty Percent of Israelis Don’t Trust Obama
Ynet (Israel)
Even before Barack Obama's historic “reconciliation speech” in Cairo on Thursday, the majority of the Israeli public - 55 percent -- felt the US president leans in favor of the Palestinians. Only five percent said Obama supports the Israeli stance, while 31 percent said they feel he is neutral, a poll published on Thursday showed. Sixty percent of Israelis don't trust the president to consider and protect Israel's interests during his efforts to improve relations between America and the Muslim world.
Hated for Obama in Israel
Max Blumenthal - Mondoweiss Video
Vicious hatred of President Obama by young Jews in Jerusalem. Video runtime: 3:48 mins.
What's Good For General Motors is Now Good for China
Irving Wesley Hall -- Oneonta Star
… Today what's good for General Motors is good only for Communist China and transnational corporations that benefit from cheap labor. GM's bankruptcy and Obama's shortsighted response exemplify the self-destruction of our country's economy over my lifetime. Before I retired as a teacher, I warned my students about several dangerous economic trends that have accelerated over the last two decades. The United States has degenerated from a world power based on industrial production to an overextended military empire based on debt and consumption. Our citizens have gone from well-paid industrial workers with comfortable savings accounts to cash-starved consumers with staggering credit card payments.
Hunting Nazis: The New Holocaust Film
Danielle Berrin - The Jewish Journal (Los Angeles)
A new spate of Holocaust films are finally letting Jews have their revenge. This comes after decades of Hollywood’s preferred Holocaust, in which Jews diligently parade to their deaths and evil Nazis escape to Canada. But lately, a handful of filmmakers are imagining a new ending. And this time, it’s the Nazis who are in danger. The only problem is, the world is so accustomed to Jewish victimhood it’s not sure how to receive this new fantasy … Rewriting history is no small feat. But the idea of a retroactive Jewish fantasy in which Nazis pay for their crimes is certainly welcome entertainment. After all, Hollywood itself was created by Jews who wanted to escape their pasts and live a better future.
Report Ties Dubious Iran Nuclear Docs to Israel
Inter Press Service
A report on Iran’s nuclear program issued by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last month generated news stories publicising an incendiary charge that U.S. intelligence is underestimating Iran’s progress in designing a "nuclear warhead" before the halt in nuclear weapons-related research in 2003. That false and misleading charge from an intelligence official of a foreign country, who was not identified but was clearly Israeli, reinforces two of Israel’s key propaganda themes on Iran …
New Zealand Tops Listing of World’s Most Peaceful Countries
The Guardian (Britain)
… New Zealand is now officially your best bet for a risk-free destination, according to the new Global Peace Index (GPI), an annual ranking of the world's nations on the basis of how peaceful they are. Despite the much-vaunted progress on security, Iraq remained bottom of the list, below Afghanistan, Somalia and Israel, which found itself listed as more dangerous than Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the top, the usual Nordic suspects clustered below New Zealand: Denmark, Norway and Iceland came second, third and fourth, followed by Austria and then Sweden.
Obama in Cairo: A Bush in Sheep’s Clothing?
Ali Abunimah
Obama's speech shows little real change. In most regards his analysis maintains flawed American policies / … Obama is already on record opposing Palestinian refugees' right to return home, and has never supported the right of Palestinian citizens of Israel to live free from racist and religious incitement, persecution and practices fanned by Israel's highest office holders and written into its laws. He may have more determination than his predecessor but he remains committed to an unworkable two-state "vision" aimed not at restoring Palestinian rights, but preserving Israel as an enclave of Israeli Jewish privilege. It is a dead end.
Netanyahu Cites Secret Deal with Bush to Justify More Settlements
The Independent (Britain)
The Israeli government of Benjmain Netanyahu is seeking to deflect Washington's demand for a total settlement freeze by complaining that it ignores secret agreements between his predecessors and the Bush administration that construction in existing Jewish settlements could continue.
Ireland Set to Go Bust, Says Economic Historian
The Belfast Telegraph (N. Ireland)
"The idea that countries don't go bust is a joke," said Niall Ferguson, Harvard professor and author of The Ascent of Money. "The debt trap may be about to spring" he said, "for countries that have created large stimulus packages in order to stimulate their economies." His chosen prime candidate to go bust is "Ireland, followed by Italy and Belgium, and UK is not too far behind" … The historian does not subscribe to the theory of the "Great Depression" repeating and says this scenario is unlikely because the Federal Reserve has "massively expanded the monetary base which is the opposite of what happened in the 1930s".
History Students are Most Promiscuous
The Telegraph (Britain)
Historians enjoy the most active sex lives according to a survey of students at Oxford University. The survey of more than 850 students by Oxford University student newspaper Cherwell also revealed that students who do not have sex more than once a month are most likely to get a first in their degree. But students who claimed to have a more active sex life are more likely to attain a 2:1 or 2:2 in their degree. Historians were found to claim to be more sexually active than any other undergraduate, closely followed by students studying politics, philosophy, economics and English literature.
Even Bigots Deserve Freedom Of Opinion
Michael Brull -- New Matilda (Australia)
It's inconsistent to call for Holocaust deniers to be jailed while remaining silent about the denial of the historical sufferings of other peoples … / … The leading Zionist organisations, which lead the campaign against Holocaust denial, support the Nakba, deny it — or both … Until the Zionist lobbies affirm that ethnic cleansing is actually a bad thing, a Palestinian descendant or survivor of the Nakba should find little moral or intellectual distinctions between these organisations and the "research" undertaken by Toben at the Adelaide Institute.
College Graduates Face Toughest Job Market In Years
ABC News
According to a survey from National Association of Colleges and Employers, the class of 2009 is leaving campus with fewer jobs in hand than their 2008 counterparts. The group's 2009 Student Survey found that just 19.7 percent of 2009 graduates who applied for a job actually have one. In comparison, 51 percent of those graduating in 2007 and 26 percent of those graduating in 2008 who had applied for a job had one in hand by the time of graduation.
Buchenwald: Legend and Reality
Mark Weber
Buchenwald is widely regarded as one of wartime Germany's most notorious "death camps." In fact, though, this carefully cultivated image bears little resemblance to reality … The camp deserves another, more objective look.
Hardline Zionists Push `Jordanian Option’ for Palestine
Inter Press Service
As U.S. President Barack Obama prepares to deliver a major foreign policy speech in Cairo and his administration pushes aggressively for a two-state solution in Israel-Palestine, neoconservatives and other foreign policy hawks back home are calling on him to scrap the two-state solution altogether and consider alternatives to Palestinian statehood. The most prominent alternative they are pushing is the so-called "three-state solution" or "Jordanian option", in which the West Bank would be returned to Jordanian control and the Gaza Strip to Egyptian control.
Holocaust a `Big Deception,’ Says Iran’s President
Agence France Presse
Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is seeking a second term in office, reiterated on Wednesday his anti-Israel stance by calling the Holocaust a "big deception". Ahmadinejad also said liberal democracies of the world have degraded "human values," the Iranian state television news website quoted him as saying. "The identity of the liberal democracy has been exposed to the world by its protection of the most criminal regime in the history of humanity, the Zionist regime, by using the big deception of the Holocaust." "There is no doubt that the only way to replace the liberal thought is to go back to the teachings of the divine prophets," Ahmadinejad said.
Ahmadinejad’s Holocaust Remarks Cited by Rival in Election Debate
The Associated Press
The main pro-reform candidate accused hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of driving Iran toward "dictatorship" and hurting its standing in the world by questioning the Holocaust, during a rare and unprecedentedly raucous election debate Wednesday. During the 90-minute debate, televised live, Ahmadinejad and opponent Mir Hossein Mousavi traded frank and direct criticisms that are unheard of in Iranian politics, where clashes are usually veiled in elliptical, polite language. Often, Mousavi appeared confident and repeatedly kept Ahmadinejad off balance with sweeping charges about Iran's internal troubles and its shortcomings on the international stage.
Popular Rabbi Backs Harsh Measures Against Arabs
Forward (New York)
Like the best Chabad-Lubavitch rabbis, Manis Friedman has won the hearts of many unaffiliated Jews with his charismatic talks about love and God … [He] showed a less warm and cuddly side when he was asked how he thinks Jews should treat their Arab neighbors. “The only way to fight a moral war is the Jewish way: Destroy their holy sites. Kill men, women and children (and cattle),” Friedman wrote in response to the question posed by Moment Magazine for its “Ask the Rabbis” feature. Friedman argued that if Israel followed this wisdom, there would be “no civilian casualties, no children in the line of fire, no false sense of righteousness, in fact, no war.” “I don’t believe in Western morality,” he wrote.
Economist Krugman Fears Prolonged Slowdown
BBC News
The economic slowdown could last five to ten years and cost trillions of dollars, a top US economist has warned. / Paul Krugman, who won the 2008 Nobel prize for economics, told the BBC that any recovery would be "so slow it would feel like a recession". He is urging the US government to introduce a second stimulus package of $500 billion to boost the economy. And he rebutted claims that such a move would be inflationary, saying it was "not impossible" to reduce the deficit.
Climate Change Crisis `Catastrophic,’ New Report Finds
CNN
The first comprehensive report into the human cost of climate change warns the world is in the throes of a "silent crisis" that is killing 300,000 people each year. More than 300 million people are already seriously affected by the gradual warming of the earth and that number is set to double by 2030, the report from the Global Humanitarian Forum warns. "For the first time we are trying to get the world's attention to the fact that climate change is not something waiting to happen. It is impacting seriously the lives of many people around the world," the forum's president, former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, told CNN.
Germany and Europe’s `Crusade Against Bolshevism’: A Reappraisal
Jeff Rutherford -- H-Net Review
The most savage and devastating conflict in modern European history was the 1941-45 German-Soviet War. The struggle, however, did not merely pit German soldiers against their Soviet counterparts. Over twenty European countries and national groups sent contingents of troops to assist the German Wehrmacht in its attempt to destroy the communist state. This "crusade against Bolshevism" drew in a minimum of 3,962,000 men from across Europe, organized in both large national armies from states allied to Germany as well as in volunteer contingents integrated directly into the Wehrmacht -- both army and Waffen-SS -- itself.
Racists for Democracy
Uri Avnery (Israel)
How lucky we are to have the extreme Right standing guard over our democracy. This week, the Knesset voted by a large majority (47 to 34) for a law that threatens imprisonment for anyone who dares to deny that Israel is a Jewish and Democratic State … All this is possible because Israel has no constitution … The most appropriate name for these holy warriors would be “Racists for Democracy”.
In Other Words: Baltic Ghosts
Foreign Policy (Washington, DC)
Lithuania is investigating Jewish Holocaust survivors as war criminals — and using their own memoirs as evidence against them. / … When Lithuania’s chief war crimes prosecutor, Rimvydas Valentukevicius, read Arad’s book, nearly 30 years after its publication, he didn’t see a hero. He saw a possible war criminal. And in September 2007, when the prosecutor’s office publicly announced an investigation into Arad, it was clear The Partisan would be Exhibit A against him. More war crimes investigations of Lithuanian Holocaust survivors have followed, and in each case, memoirs are playing a central role.
Israeli Attack on Iran Unlikely to Succeed, New Study Concludes
Forward (New York)
As Israel continues to proclaim its readiness to launch a military attack on Iran should American diplomacy fail to stop Tehran’s drive for nuclear capabilities, an increasing number of analysts and some political leaders are publicly questioning Jerusalem’s confident portrayal of its chance for military success. … Their conclusion: Chances of a strong success — defined by how much of Iran’s uranium enrichment program is destroyed or the number of years the attack delays Iran’s acquisition of material sufficient to build a nuclear bomb — seem dubious, while the risks of the undertaking and its harsh military and destabilizing geopolitical consequences seem overwhelming.
US Man Evades Prison Time in `Mysterious' Israel Spy Case
Reuters
An 85-year-old former civilian employee of the U.S. Army was fined but avoided prison time on Friday after earlier pleading guilty to giving classified documents to Israel in the 1980s, in a case the sentencing judge said was "shrouded in mystery." Court documents showed that Ben-Ami Kadish, who was fined $50,000 but spared prison time, reported to the same handler as Jonathan Pollard, an American who spied for Israel in the 1980s and triggered a scandal that rocked U.S.-Israeli relations. "Why it took the government 23 years to charge Mr. Kadish is shrouded in mystery," U.S. District Judge William Pauley said.
Men Bedeviled in Bid for Sanctuary: `Heretical Two’ Still Behind Bars
Dana Parsons -- Los Angeles Times
When Simon Sheppard and Stephen Whittle stepped off a plane at LAX in July 2008 -- a couple of jet-lagged Brits on the lam from the United Kingdom -- they looked for the first uniformed U.S. official they could find. Unfortunately for them, they found one. They thought they had found safe harbor from the English court that three days earlier had convicted them of hate-related writings originating on their website. Rather than wait for sentencing -- expected to range from a year or two for Whittle to perhaps five years or more for Sheppard -- the men skipped bail and hopped a plane in Dublin, believing that U.S. free-speech traditions and the visa waivers they secured at an Irish airport would shield them.
Dutch Liberal Leader Says Holocaust Denial Should Not Be a Crime
Haaretz (Israel)
A proposal to decriminalize Holocaust denial in the Netherlands by the leader of the Dutch liberal party touched off controversy in the party on Wednesday and drew criticism from prominent Jewish figures and from the political establishment. Mark Rutte, head of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), said Dutch law should only prosecute those inciting to violence, not hatred. Claiming the Holocaust did not occur "should be possible," Rutte added.

We’re Moving!
In an important step that will improve our cost-effectiveness and better secure our future, we’re moving our operations to a less expensive and more professional office-warehouse property about seven miles from the quarters in southern California we’ve occupied for years. (Our mailing address is unchanged.) This move is the latest in a series of measures taken in recent months to improve our productivity and better secure our future. It also re-affirms our dedication to the IHR’s long-term effectiveness and survival.
Irving, Weber to Address IHR Meeting, July 25
David Irving and Mark Weber will address an IHR meeting on Saturday, July 25, in Orange County, southern California. With his trademark verve, the best-selling British historian will provide informed insight based on original research and experiences from his kinetic life. Weber will tackle an important historical topic, and provide an update on the IHR’s work. Further details about the event will be announced soon.
`Worldwatch’ Broadcasts
The IHR’s `Worldwatch’ broadcasts provide substantive, thoughtful perspective on current event sand topical historical issues. Written and presented by Mark Weber -- author, historian and IHR director -- the broadcasts can be heard on or downloaded from the IHR’s “Audio Archive” web page.
Straight Talk About Zionism
By Mark Weber
… A Zionist Jew, by definition, owes his primary loyalty to the Jewish community and to Israel. Zionism is not compatible with patriotism to any country or entity other than Israel and the world Jewish community … Zionist Jews and their non-Jewish supporters embrace a blatant double standard. Jewish-Zionist organizations, along with their non-Jewish allies, support one social-political ideology for Israel and the world Jewish community, and a completely different one for the United States and other non-Jewish countries. They insist that ethnic nationalism is evil and bad for non-Jews, while at the same time they vigorously support ethnic nationalism -- that is, Zionism -- for Jews.
IHR Condemns Holocaust Museum Shooting
The Institute for Historical Review unequivocally condemns the shooting yesterday at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, in which a security guard was killed. “We condemn this despicable and criminal attack, carried out by an obviously deranged individual,” says Mark Weber, director of the IHR. “We are all the more emphatic in condemning such violence because the IHR itself has been a victim of extremist violence.”
Progress Report: How The IHR is Making a Difference
Feb. 2009
The IHR doesn’t just “preach to the choir.” Consider, for example, the global impact of just one IHR item, “A Straight Look at the Jewish Lobby.” … This item -- which is regularly revised and updated -- has been reprinted in newspapers in the US and overseas. It’s been posted on many websites around the world. Many tens of thousands of copies have been distributed as leaflets … No similar group - certainly none with a comparably modest budget and staff - rivals the IHR's level of outreach and distribution …
The `Good War’ Myth of World War II, and Why It’s Dangerous
By Mark Weber
How accurate is this hallowed portrayal of America’s role in World War II? As we shall see, it does not hold up under close examination … The three Allied leaders accomplished what they accused the Axis leaders of Germany, Italy and Japan of conspiring to achieve: world domination … Presidential deception to justify war did not start with George W. Bush. Americans who express admiration for the US role in World War II, and for Franklin Roosevelt’s presidential leadership, have little moral right to complain when presidents follow his example and lead the country into war by breaking the law, subverting the Constitution, and lying to the people.
What Christians Don’t Know About Israel
By Grace Halsell
American Jews sympathetic to Israel dominate key positions in all areas of our government where decisions are made regarding the Middle East. This being the case, is there any hope of ever changing U.S. policy? … The answer to achieving an even-handed Middle East policy might lie elsewhere -- among those who support Israel but don't really know why. This group is the vast majority of Americans. They are well-meaning, fair-minded Christians who feel bonded to Israel - and Zionism - often from atavistic feelings, in some cases dating from childhood.
A Straight Look at the Jewish Lobby
By Mark Weber
… Jews wield immense power and influence in the United States. The "Jewish lobby" is a decisive factor in US support for Israel. Jewish-Zionist interests are not identical to American interests. In fact, they often conflict. As long as the "very powerful" Jewish lobby remains entrenched, there will be no end to the systematic Jewish distortion of current affairs and history, the Jewish-Zionist domination of the U.S. political system, Zionist oppression of Palestinians, the bloody conflict between Jews and non-Jews in the Middle East, and the Israeli threat to peace.
What is Holocaust Denial?
By Barbara Kulaszka
In recent years, considerable attention has been devoted to the supposed danger of "Holocaust denial." Politicians, newspapers and television warn about the growing influence of those who reject the Holocaust story that some six million European Jews were systematically exterminated during the Second World War, most of them in gas chambers. In several countries, including Israel, France, Germany and Austria, "Holocaust denial" is against the law, and "deniers" have been punished with stiff fines and prison sentences. … Often overlooked in this controversy is the crucial question: Just what constitutes "Holocaust denial"?
Obama’s Promised Foreign Policy `Change’ Will Be Mostly Cosmetic
By Mark Weber - Dec. 2008
… The appointments that Obama has made to positions in the new administration, along with his public statements of recent months, show that he is unlikely to make major changes in U.S. foreign policy. The promised “change” will be mostly cosmetic. His foreign policy will be familiar, but conducted more prudently and with more appealing style. During the election campaign, Obama never called into question the basic premise of U.S. military interventionism around the world. His pledge to increase U.S. military forces in Afghanistan shows that he supports the misguided “war on terror,” and accepts an American role as a global policeman.
In 'Eisenhower's Death Camps': A U.S. Prison Guard Remembers
By Martin Brech
... In Andernach about 50,000 [German] prisoners of all ages were held in an open field surrounded by barbed wire. The women were kept in a separate enclosure that I did not see until later. The men I guarded had no shelter and no blankets. Many had no coats. They slept in the mud, wet and cold, with inadequate slit trenches for excrement ... I encountered a captain on a hill above the Rhine shooting down at a group of German civilian women with his .45 caliber pistol. When I asked, "Why?," he mumbled, "Target practice," and fired until his pistol was empty.

Abraham Lincoln and the Issue of Race
By Robert Morgan
Many Americans think of Abraham Lincoln, above all, as the president who freed the slaves. Immortalized as the "Great Emancipator," he is widely regarded as a champion of black freedom who supported social equality of the races, and who fought the American Civil War to free the slaves. While it is true that Lincoln regarded slavery as an evil and harmful institution, it also true, as this paper will show, that he shared the conviction of most Americans of his time, and of many prominent statesmen before and after him, that blacks could not be assimilated into white society. He rejected the notion of social equality of the races, and held to the view that blacks should be resettled abroad.
Israel at 60: A Grim Balance Sheet
By Mark Weber
… Contrary to claims made by American and Israeli political leaders, US support for Israel has never been in America’s authentic national interest, nor has it been based on a commitment to democracy and freedom … In spite of its impressive military arsenal, and virtually unlimited support from the United States, Israel’s long-term prospects are not good … Although Israel is a formidable military power, it is an aberrant, crisis-prone state, artificially kept alive with outside support, and based on an unworkable ideology.
The Challenge of Jewish-Zionist Power
By Mark Weber
Regardless of the particular causes or principles that most move us, that are closest to our hearts, no issue is of greater urgency than breaking the Jewish-Zionist grip on American political, social and cultural life … Now we are engaged in a great global struggle -- in which two distinct and irreconcilable sides confront each other. A struggle that pits a self-assured and diabolical power that feels ordained to rule over others, on one side, and all other nations and societies -- indeed, humanity itself -- on the other.
The Elusive `Six Million'
By Mark Weber
… The Six Million figure is hammered into the public consciousness, not only in newspapers, magazines, motion pictures, and television, but also routinely in our schools … An information sheet issued by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council describes the grand Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, as a "living memorial to the six million Jews and millions of other victims of Nazi fanaticism who perished in the Holocaust." Just what is the basis for this familiar figure?
The Jewish Role in the Bolshevik Revolution and Russia's Early Soviet Regime
By Mark Weber
Jews played a highly disproportionate and probably decisive role in the infant Bolshevik regime, effectively dominating the Soviet government during its early years … With the notable exception of Lenin, most of the leading Communists who took control of Russia in 1917-20 were Jews … The US ambassador in Russia warned in a dispatch to Washington: "The Bolshevik leaders here, most of whom are Jews and 90 percent of whom are returned exiles, care little for Russia or any other country but are internationalists and they are trying to start a worldwide social revolution."

Bishop Williamson and `Holocaust Denial’: Why the Uproar?
By Mark Weber
The furor over the “Holocaust denial” remarks of Bishop Richard Williamson is not a controversy about historical truth, the role of history in society, anti-Semitism or “hate.” This affair is really about power -- about those who really wield it in our culture, as well as about how and why that power is used.
Weber Addresses Peace Conference in Baltimore
Mark Weber addressed a conference to promote peace and cross-cultural understanding on August 16 in suburban Baltimore. In a crisply delivered and well-received address, the IHR director spoke about the motives behind the US invasion of Iraq, the harmful consequences of America's "blank check" support for Israel, the Jewish-Zionist grip on US foreign policy, the danger of new wars, and the prospects for an effective peace movement. The event was organized by an Islamic association, Jamaat Al-Muslimeen. Among the other speakers were: Ramsey Clark, former US Attorney General; Charles E. Carlson, director of "We Hold These Truths," a Christian organization for peace and justice; and, Dr. Kaukab Siddique, MC and publisher of "New Trend Magazine."
A Zionist Smear: The ADL Attacks an Islamic Peace Conference

In the Struggle for Peace and Justice
By Mark Weber
... By supporting Israel and its policies, the United States betrays not only its own national interests, but the principles it claims to embody and defend. The only country in the world that has a nuclear weapons arsenal, that occupies territory of its neighbors, and which is in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions - is Israel. In fact, if the United States were to hold Israel to the same standards that it has applied to Iraq, Serbia, and other countries, American bombers and missiles would be blasting Tel Aviv, and American troops would seize Israel's leaders and punish them for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Irving Describes His Austria Imprisonment at IHR Meeting
In an engaging talk at a memorable IHR meeting, June 14, 2008, David Irving described his harrowing arrest in Austria, his sensational trial in Vienna, and his 13 months of imprisonment. The British historian also spoke about wartime Germany's harsh treatment of Jews, presenting a view of "the Holocaust" similar to the one he laid out more than 30 years ago in the first edition of Hitler's War. Mark Weber took aim at the American national mythology about World War II. He spoke about the two new books by Patrick J. Buchanan and Nicholson Baker, praising them as important antidotes to the familiar, much propagandized portrayal of the war.
First-Rate Talks Mark Successful IHR Meeting
First-rate talks by three seasoned speakers marked a memorable IHR meeting on May 24, 2008, in southern California. Paul Fromm reported with insight and humor on the battle for on-line free speech in Canada. Mark Weber, in a closely reasoned and well-referenced lecture, dismantled the myth of World War II as a "good war" clash between virtue and evil. Mark Green explained why the dread label of "anti-Semitism" is inaccurate and bogus.

`For Fear of the Jews’
By Joseph Sobran
The news that I would be addressing the Institute of Historical Review came to some people as, well, news. It was mentioned in the Jewish newspaper Forward and on the Zionist Wall Street Journal OnLine. The editors of two conservative magazines called and wrote me to express their concern that I might damage my reputation, such as it is, by speaking to "Holocaust deniers." … In short, the Holocaust has become a device for exempting Jews from normal human obligations. It has authorized them to bully and blackmail, to extort and oppress. This is all quite irrational, because even if six million Jews were murdered during World War II, the survivors are not entitled to commit the slightest injustice.

My Patient, Hitler: A Memoir of Hitler’s Jewish Physician

… I knew Adolf Hitler as a boy and as a young man. I treated him many times and was intimately familiar with the modest surroundings in which he grew to manhood. I attended, in her final illness, the person nearer and dearer to him than all others -- his mother … What kind of boy was Adolf Hitler? Many biographers have put him down as harsh-voiced, defiant, untidy; as a young ruffian who personified all that is unattractive. This simply is not true. As a youth he was quiet, well-mannered and neatly dressed.
